The journey to having my first novel for children published has been riddled with road blocks and shonky bridges. The good news? At every rickety stage I've picked up tips (and anti-tips) which I'm happy to share with Newswrite readers...Read For me, this was the easy stage! Aspiring writers need to read like maniacs to be aware of other writers' work, both locally and internationally. There is no point writing a killer story if it resembles something already published. Sadly, that means no scar-faced teen wizards named Barry.Write Here's a simple equation: the more you write, the better you become at writing. By the time I was ready to be born I'd already completed my first three manuscripts (spent most of the time looking around for somewhere to plug in my laptop). When the doctor smacked me on the backside I squinted at him and went, 'Waaah!' Which of course meant, 'Ah, you must be my agent!' I went on to scrawl home-made comics throughout my childhood before I began writing for surf magazines at age 17. Since then, I've had thousands of articles and pieces of fiction published. A lot were 'hack' stories; a few won me awards and contests. All helped build my writing skills and voice.Feedback A local teacher read my first manuscript to his class (thank you, Bob Swoope). The feedback was terrific. One kid enthused, "It's just like Harry Potter, only funnier!" I dined off that compliment for a month. I'm lucky ten year olds believe payment in Paddle Pops is the industry standard for editors, else I'd be broke by now (well, actually I am broke). I read all my stories to my daughter, her friends, and any young relatives I can bail up. Whenever my juvenile focus groups wander off to the nearest TV, I know the chapter I'm reading needs major reconstruction. Whenever the kids sit glued to their chairs and demand more, I know my story is heading in the right direction (and I've bought the right glue and Paddle Pops). It's useful to let adults rip into your story as well. Adult writers, that is. I've learned it's best to avoid family members and friends, unless you enjoy making these people flee whenever they see you. Join a local or online critique group instead. Growing elephant-thick skin will also help you through this stage.Rewrite Finally, you think your book is ready. It isn't. Time to let the manuscript breathe for a month, before revising it with fresh eyes. Be ruthless. Hack those excess adjectives that editors loathe. Delete every scene that does not sparkle, advance the plot on multiple levels and compel the reader to keep reading. Rewrite again As a writer for children, you're not only competing against the mutant slush pile from Hell and other kid's books, but against the internet, computer games and 24 hour cartoon networks. Remember: the modern kid is smarter, more savvy and easily bored than any generation before.Submitting Crunch time. When you submit your first manuscript, get stuck straight into writing the second. When your manuscript returns unloved, send another submission out on the same day (or even better, send two). For every five rejections, rewrite. Never surrender.Over the course of several months, I sent my manuscript to every agent in the country. They all rejected until I was dejected. So I directly targeted publishers instead. I almost fell out of my computer chair when the second one immediately replied. The wonderful Ibis Publishing of Melbourne liked my story so much, they asked me to commit to writing two more in the same series. Truth is, to be published, I would have committed to writing a sequel naked in a bubble in the middle of Pitt Street. Luckily, they didn't. But I still have my bubble.Pre-publication Over a year has gone by since my book was accepted. My patient editor Belinda Bolliger has driven me through two more rewrites to add backstory, cull my ellipsis fever and tone down my more extreme jokes. My major character has become less obnoxious and had a sex change from girl to boy. Why? Apparently, girls will read about boys; but boys aren't happy reading about girls.I originally named my book after the planet of talking horses and mutant chooks at the centre of my story. However, Uponia (too strange) was changed to Planet Horse Fart (too rude) to ZAPP to Planet Horse (too horsey) to Raz James and The Amazing ZAPP Discovery (too vague) to Erasmus James and the Galactic ZAPP Machine (too... wait, that's it!). The cover art has changed almost as many times while the date of publication has been put back from last Christmas to May to June to September. Fingers crossed on that last one! It is vital to remain flexible and positive through such changes and delays. Yoga helps. Better to get everything right than to rush out an inferior product. The extra time has also given me time to set up a website, work out a battle plan with the Ibis marketing team Anthony and Paola and watch my hair turn even more grey. Meanwhile, my bank account has nose-dived, but who really needs fancy mod-cons like electricity and food?On the road Last month I drove to Sydney to psyche up the Pan Macmillan sales team. I delivered a ten minute standup comedy routine and was as surprised as anyone when the friendly team laughed at my feeble jokes and seemed enthused about selling my book. On the long drive home, I realised this would be but the first of many such promotional trips: to schools, book signings, anything and everything that will help me sell a few more copies and keep doing what I love so much. Then the rain began to bucket and my front tyre blew out. As I bounced into the bush, I realised I was about to experience another first on the scenic detour known as Publication Road.

In March, 2007 Casio released Jack Halpern's highly acclaimed Kanji Learner's Dictionary (KALD) for the EX-word Dataplus series of electronic dictionaries, available in both CD-ROM and SD card, which is a far more useful kanji dictionary to English-speaking learners of Japanese. Until recently, kanji dictionaries found in many denshi jisho models were of limited use to English-speaking Learners of Japanese (EsLJ) in the elementary to intermediate levels since its entries, written in Japanese, presupposes a considerable degree of literacy in Japanese to be able to use it profitably. Generally, EsLJ use a denshi jisho's kanji dictionary to merely obtain a kanji's on-kun readings and still have to rely on their paper editions to learn its meaning and stroke order. (While some denshi jisho makers recently began to include stroke-order animation this feature is quite limited to a few select models.) Furthermore, using a denshi jisho to look up kanji when reading a Japanese magazine, newspaper, or book also requires some knowledge about kanji radicals and parts to expedite the look-up process. It is little wonder then that Casio's March 2007 release of Jack Halpern's Kanji Learner's Dictionary (KALD) for EX-word Dataplus models has created quite a stir because this is perhaps the first time that a kanji dictionary principally geared towards the learning needs of EsLJ has become available as electronic dictionary content. At present though, there is yet no Dataplus model that includes the KALD as a bundled-in dictionary; instead, users will have to purchase this separately in either a CD-ROM or SD card as add-on content. This characteristic usefulness of the KALD mainly derives from its providing the English core meanings of kanji - a simple enough difference but one that is of great significance as to how EsLJ memorize kanji characters. The English core meaning "is a concise keyword that conveys the character's most fundamental meaning," and "appeals to the learner's powers of association," thus greatly facilitating the learning event. KALD entries also features a stroke-order diagram that will certainly be most helpful to beginner-level kanji learners. With 2926 kanji entries, the KALD will enable users to look up almost any kanji encountered while reading modern print literature such as newspapers, books, magazines, including the 285 kanji in the official list (Jinmei list) of kanji approved for use in personal names. Each kanji entry usually also includes a list of words using that kanji and a short definition of each. This compound-kanji word list often saves the user the extra effort of looking up the meaning of a compound-kanji word in the denshi jisho's Japanese-English dictionary. The cumbersome process of looking up kanji using conventional dictionaries has long vexed both EsLJ and native Japanese learners alike. These kanji dictionaries use stroke count, radicals, and kanji parts singly or in combination as kanji search indices. The print edition of KALD uses an ingenious "System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns (SKIP)" that enables users to look up kanji much more quickly, and this was hailed by many Japanese language educators as a major breakthrough with regard to this problem. The denshi jisho edition of KALD also offers the use of SKIP as an alternative kanji look-up method in addition to the conventional search methods using radicals and on-kun readings. Thus, when looking up kanji encountered from external content (i.e. content that is not stored in the denshi jisho's memory resources) such as print materials, even users who own older-generation Casio Dataplus models that are not equipped with handwriting recognition can still benefit from the use of SKIP. However for those fortunate users who already own any of the latest models from the EX-word Dataplus3 series (e.g. Casio XD GW6800), looking up kanji has never been easier since KALD also allows a search based on handwriting input. What both the print and denshi jisho editions of KALD lack is an index based on the English core meanings of kanji. For a dictionary that touts the mnemonic significance of English core meanings to an EsLJ's learning of kanji this oversight seems all the more baffling. Since many EsLJ will more readily recall the English meaning of a kanji character than its on-kun reading or stroke order, there will be many occasions wherein they will want to verify the meanings of vaguely familiar kanji using an English-meaning index. Enabling such a search also greatly helps reinforce the associative link between a character and its meaning. Adding an English-meaning index seems simple enough though, and perhaps we can expect the creators of KALD to include this in the next edition. "Triple Tsuika" is the defining feature of the EX-word Dataplus series - the feature that allows users to add to the internal content (i.e. Data that resides in the denshi jisho's memory resources) via CD-ROM, SD card, and text download. This is the very feature that makes it possible to install KALD into a Casio Dataplus denshi jisho. Once installed, a user browsing an entry in a different dictionary (e.g. Japanese-English dictionary) can use the denshi jisho's Superjump function to select a particular kanji and segue to the KALD to look it up. This also works just as well for user-installed content, such as books or encyclopedias from commercial content providers or internet freeware sites, allowing a Casio Dataplus to function as an e-book reader. Retirement is the light at the end of the tunnel for most of us isn't it? Finally, it's time to take that extended vacation, never sit in traffic again, and spoiling the grand kids becomes your top priority. It also means you no longer need the big house, time to down size which for many will mean time to say hello to a condo about one third the size of their home for the past 10 to 20 years. In the past couple of weeks, I've been working with clients who are going through this very change in their lives. They know it's the right thing to do, but that doesn't make it any easier. Once they've accepted that a cozy condo is in their near future, the next question is what to do with all that furniture. Much of if is too big for any area of the upcoming condo. Despite the age of the furniture, or the fact that it doesn't conform to the current contemporary style furnishing condos today, you still love it. What to do with all that furniture 2008-04-04
Retirement is the light at the end of the tunnel for most of us isn't it? Finally, it's time to take that extended vacation, never sit in traffic again, and spoiling the grand kids becomes your top priority. It also means you no longer need the big house, time to down size which for many will mean time to say hello to a condo about one third the size of their home for the past 10 to 20 years. In the past couple of weeks, I've been working with clients who are going through this very change in their lives. They know it's the right thing to do, but that doesn't make it any easier. Once they've accepted that a cozy condo is in their near future, the next question is what to do with all that furniture. Much of if is too big for any area of the upcoming condo. Despite the age of the furniture, or the fact that it doesn't conform to the current contemporary style furnishing condos today, you still love it. Perhaps It's out datedness brings back to another time, and of course you've got your precious memories. This can be a delicate issue when it comes to downsizing, so here are my suggestions of what to do, and feel great about the new home you've found for your old furniture.
Donate it Someone once told me, that a true donation is not just giving away things like shoes or clothes that have no use for you anymore, although this is still much better then just tossing them in the garbage. True donation, is when you've given something away that still has value for you. So make a true donation, appreciate the memories that the furniture has brought you, and now give the opportunity to someone less fortunate to create their own memories.
