They know what they want to say, and may even know the word they want to say but so often they are not able to form that word in a way that an adult can understand. This leads to frustration on both the part of the adult and the child and, more often than not, results in your little one crying as you both fumble around with communication. But this is just a part of growing up, right? Wrong!
Baby signing is a way of getting your child to make itself understood from as young an age as seven or eight months old. It uses broad and easily understandable gestures to indicate words and phrases giving your child a whole new vocabulary, before they even learn to speak. Children who learn to sign find that they are quicker to communicate and therefore are less inclined to have tantrums due to frustration. There is also studies that say that signing leads to a higher IQ in your child; they are likened to sponges at a young age and pick things up very quickly.

Have you ever wondered about the differences between various types of exercise? For example, why should a person have to do aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise (i.e. lift weights), and stretch? Isn't there a neat, tidy little way to just roll it all into one and get it over with?
Well, there's a good reason you should be doing a range of different exercise types. It's known as the 'principle of training specificity'. In plain English that means that your body will adapt quite differently to the three basic types of exercise, and that one can't really substitute for the other. Let's look at each of the three exercise types briefly:
Anaerobic training (Weight lifting): When you perform any type of resistance exercise, such as lifting weights, your muscles (and bones) adapt by getting bigger and stronger. This is beneficial because it allows you to do everyday things better and more safely, such as lifting your child or keeping your balance on the stairs. Also, when your body works anaerobically it is burning fuel (mostly carbohydrates) without using oxygen. This requires a certain metabolic pathway, and specific enzymes. As you perform this type of exercise this pathway and enzymes become more efficient at their jobs.
Aerobic training (Endurance): Muscular and cardiovascular endurance are improved with aerobic exercise, allowing you do go further with less effort. When you exercise aerobically your body is able to supply oxygen to the process of burning fuel it has stored. This allows it to burn fat rather than carbohydrates, and uses an entirely different metabolic pathway along with different enzymes. Just as when you work anaerobically, working aerobically causes this pathway to become more efficient. Want to train your body how to burn fat for fuel? Aerobic exercise is the key.
Flexibility (Stretching): When you do flexibility exercises you are teaching your muscles to move further, more easily, and more freely. This is important to keep you free of injury, as well as to enhance your posture and body alignment. You can see that each of the three types of exercise have their place and that all are important. Any exercise program that doesn't include all three is simply incomplete and won't be as effective as one that is more well rounded. Keeping your baby safe is one of the greatest concerns of any new parent. The numerous newspaper headlines of babies being rushed off to hospital after being involved in accidents involving toys does not help new parent's confidence. What new parents have got to do is take care when they buy their new baby toys and be careful how they treat them in the house.
They are now greatly aided by new EU regulations that have placed rigid rules on toy manufactures. This has resulted in the actual safety of the toy itself greatly improving and now moving the emphasis on toy use safety back onto the parent. A new parent's major concern over baby toy safety should be focused on the suitability of the toy for the baby.
New regulations clearly state on each toy what age range the toy is suitable for. The danger now lies in the parent providing a toy that is unsuitable for their age range. A good example of this is when the baby has an elder sibling and has access to their toys that are inadvertently left lying around.
When buying new baby toys all new parents should check that the item has a CE mark or Lion Mark. If the product carries one of these marks the parent can have the assurance that the toys are manufactured in line with a strict set of criteria's. Parents must be cautious of toys that do not carry these marks. They should assume that they are totally unsuitable and as such are not safe for the baby. A good example of such items is usually cheap toys available at market stalls or prizes at fair grounds.
The new parents should also check carefully the quality of the toy. Be especially vigilant when looking for small parts that might easily become detached. This is especially important if the baby is under three years of age. The danger lies in the baby trying to swallow the loose bits which may result in them chocking to death.
It is widely accepted that you should never give a baby under the age of three any toys that are less than 35mm. Again if swallowed these may again result in the baby chocking. Other things to watch out for are balloons. Many parents make the mistake of allowing their babies to play with balloons without any thought for the consequences of the balloon bursting and the baby then swallowing it.
Parents should also be vigilant of grandparents wheeling out their old favourite toys. One of the classic examples of this is the game of marbles. Years ago marbles were popular for young children before people became aware of their potential dangers. Many grandparents still have their old marble sets and allow babies to play with them without realising the potentially fatal consequences.
Other areas that should be watched out for are toys with ribbons attached as again the baby may chew on it and choke. Also try to avoid allowing babies access to toys with magnetic parts and regularly check that the toys are in good condition. Basically use good common sense and good housekeeping techniques.
A good source of advice and common sense is other parents. They will have already gone through the learning curve that you are about to experience and most will readily share their experiences and advice with you. Also remember that the toy is for the baby and not for you. Many new dads make the mistake of buying a toy that they would like and not what is suitable for the baby.

Keeping your baby safe is one of the greatest concerns of any new parent. What new parents have got to do is take care when they buy their new baby toys and be careful how they treat them in the house.
They are now greatly aided by new EU regulations that have placed rigid rules on toy manufactures. This has resulted in the actual safety of the toy itself greatly improving and now moving the emphasis on toy use safety back onto the parent. New regulations clearly state on each toy what age range the toy is suitable for. The danger now lies in the parent providing a toy that is unsuitable for their age range. A good example of this is when the baby has an elder sibling and has access to their toys that are inadvertently left lying around.
When buying new baby toys all new parents should check that the item has a CE mark or Lion Mark. If the product carries one of these marks the parent can have the assurance that the toys are manufactured in line with a strict set of criteria's. Parents must be cautious of toys that do not carry these marks. They should assume that they are totally unsuitable and as such are not safe for the baby. A good example of such items is usually cheap toys available at market stalls or prizes at fair grounds.
The new parents should also check carefully the quality of the toy. Be especially vigilant when looking for small parts that might easily become detached. This is especially important if the baby is under three years of age. The danger lies in the baby trying to swallow the loose bits which may result in them chocking to death.
It is widely accepted that you should never give a baby under the age of three any toys that are less than 35mm. Again if swallowed these may again result in the baby chocking. Other things to watch out for are balloons. Many parents make the mistake of allowing their babies to play with balloons without any thought for the consequences of the balloon bursting and the baby then swallowing it.
Parents should also be vigilant of grandparents wheeling out their old favourite toys. One of the classic examples of this is the game of marbles. Years ago marbles were popular for young children before people became aware of their potential dangers. Many grandparents still have their old marble sets and allow babies to play with them without realising the potentially fatal consequences.
Other areas that should be watched out for are toys with ribbons attached as again the baby may chew on it and choke. Also try to avoid allowing babies access to toys with magnetic parts and regularly check that the toys are in good condition. Basically use good common sense and good housekeeping techniques.
A good source of advice and common sense is other parents. They will have already gone through the learning curve that you are about to experience and most will readily share their experiences and advice with you. So for all those of us who actually like being single and do not need to be married to prove we are in fact really women and not men in drag I dedicate this article. If you are with a man and want to get rid of him and let him think he did it himself, or you are with a man and he is getting a bit too serious, then read on:
It is commonly thought that men run from commitment and so turning up for a date in a wedding dress or meeting his parents and asking "can I call you Mom?" used to be a sure fire way of getting rid of him. However the rise of the "metro sexual" man has put paid to all of that. Men now want to talk about feelings and steal our hair products so we need a new strategy.
If you are dating a man whose beauty regime makes yours look like a slap in the face with a damp towel, then competing with him means buying better products than he does. Ok so it goes against the grain to spend £20 on moisturiser when you have saddle soap and an old packet of lard in the cupboard, but buy it you must. A cheaper version of this is to find a friend with lots of expensive products and steam off the labels. Although I suppose if she wasn't going to notice you steaming the labels off she probably wouldn't spot you taking them altogether.
Make a big show of using the expensive stuff then pick his up, look at it, and put it back down with a sigh. Look at him at this moment and tell him how lovely his skin looks. Even if that happens to be true, the seed of doubt will have been sown. No man can compete with a woman whose beauty products are better than his and he will want to trade you in for a woman who wears no make up and wants to bask in his glory.
Men can get very involved in the bits that used to be "just for girls". Like planning the wedding and looking at catalogues. So if you are dating mature, "planning for the future" man, it's a good idea to paint a really bad picture of your potential life together. Conversations about him giving up his football/ beer/friends/family/job will usually make the bravest of them stop and think. Too many times you let them steer the conversation into how much they love you, how lovely it will be to be together all the time, how they don't need anyone else. Make them realise that those situations would be non existent and that your time together now is only bearable because of the interruptions from football/beer/friends/family/job. If he is really stubborn (or blinded by love as they like to see it) then make him give up everything else for 2 weeks. I mean everything. He cannot do a thing unless it is with you. Drive him to work, pick him up afterwards. Go out with him, wait at the gym for him, drink with him and talk to him constantly. Let's be honest here, would you want to see that much of yourself?
Independent men used to be easily scared off. Being too clingy, especially in front of their friends did the trick with embarrassing ease. These days it isn't enough. Independent man now wants a clingy woman to endorse his manliness and confirm his desirability in front of his mates. So the trick here is to be two women. That's in an emotional sense, not in a scary wearing a wig, pretending to be your own twin way. When alone be very clingy. Want his whole itinerary, ask to see his texts, ring him as long as he's alone. Talk a lot about "next year" and "the wedding". As soon as his mates are there, act like he is invisible. He will be telling his mates how badly you want him and how he is stringing you along. They will laugh at how you discuss wedding plans with him and how you think you'll be together next year. Once they can hear, do the opposite. If he mentions plans for next week, smile and say "let's see how we feel then". Any mention of weddings and rings, look sadly at him and say "I don't want to embarrass you in front of your friends, let's talk when we're alone". At this point, look directly at one of his mates and roll your eyes. He'll be gone in a week.
I thought Neanderthal man was long dead. Not literally of course, I did do history at school and I am aware he's been gone a while. No I mean the one man type we all recognise even without realising we think men fit into types. This one looks a bit odd. They have a slightly "missing link" look about them, communicate in grunts and live on beer. Women only exist to them as servants and housekeepers oh and sexual slaves of course. Bizarrely for all their simple behaviour, a lot of women like them. This seems to be because they have a strong base instinct for protecting their women. They can be spotted in bars as the ones saying "don't touch/look at/buy a drink for, breathe near MY woman" whilst adopting a stance of readiness for action. This stance shows itself as having a chest sticking out further than their feet, hands clenching and unclenching and a woman clinging to their arm saying "don't hit him, he wasn't doing nothing, he ain't worth it".
Getting rid of this one is relatively easy. They want a girl to be a girl. You have to need them. I mean really need them to the point of helplessness. You have to become so weak you cannot open a single jar yourself. Nor can you open doors, lift shopping bags or drive a car. Strangely though you can lift lots of washing and open any type of beer can with your teeth. So if he comes home to find you have driven to the shops, opened several jars to make dinner including the one he couldn't open himself and fixed the oil leak on the car, he is history. If there is any final resistance, add that you have bought him a pink shirt and some facial products and you have enrolled you both into a "getting to know your partner" class and he won't just leave the house, he'll move away.
If your man isn't really a type then try some general tactics. Leaving a copy of "How to Please your Woman in Bed, improve your technique" on the coffee table when friends are coming can help. Crashing his car or if you want more prolonged torture, just driving it really badly will eventually drive him nuts. Selling his car to buy something really girly often finishes a relationship completely. Giving him shopping lists is simple and cheap. One hidden in his wallet so it falls out at the office lunchtime drink works a treat.
I suppose there's one last thing to try. You could bring back the art of conversation. Just tell him. Men can't multi task so don't tell him when he's washing up, watching tv, shaving or dressing. In fact definitely not when shaving. If any of it did get through he's likely to slice his face open.
Plan your words carefully. Don't waffle. Explain that you were really just looking for sex and someone to buy dinner for you and that all your friends are fixed up and you felt left out. Say you don't want to lose him but that you wanted a man who just popped in occasionally and who fainted at the words commitment and feelings.
If at this point he cries or tries to cut himself with his razor (I told you not to do it when he's shaving) then put his stuff in a bag and call him a taxi. If though he laughs, says "Thank God for that I can stop pretending" and leaves the washing up half finished (I told you...) then I'd keep him.......... For EVER!

There are to many different kinds of blankets for babies and you may be at a loss if you are buying such an item for a special little arrival. Finding the right product might be a bit of a challenge but you can narrow down your options in a few ways. You may already have blankets for babies in mind and this is a great start.
The first thing you want to consider is the way that the items will be used. Some blankets for babies are purely decorative in nature. For example, just about every nursery has a theme and many parents choose items that suit that particular theme. Whether you like a ducky motif or a Noah's Arc theme you can find many baby blankets with a good flair.
It is important to note that that so many of these decorative blankets for babies are not really supposed to be used as regular bedding. The decorative baby bedding is strictly for show and should never be used when the little one is sleeping during naptime or during the night.
This actually came as a real surprise to me. I put a Boyd's Bear baby crib bedding set on my gift registry. I was thrilled to see that one of my relatives chose to purchase it for my baby shower. However, it was a little disappointing to come get the news that the blankets for babies in these sets should be used strictly for decoration.
I offered great appreciation for the lovely gifts and my sister (who made the thoughtful purchase) added, "You know that these blankets for babies are for decoration only." I then offered my surprise. Of course, the manufacturer added this note on the packaging but many moms might not notice.

That was the most memorable thing that Ed would say to me all day. Ed (not his real name) was the number-two executive at a major U.S. financial firm, and first in line to succeed the soon-to-retire CEO. He had been through the wringer with a number of media trainers, and it showed.
We had been introduced, and Ed just didn't want to be with me. There was a seemingly permanent scowl on his beefy, reddish face. He had a perfectly pressed shirt and great gold cufflinks, but his collar was a couple of sizes too tight.
When it came time for our mock interview, Ed spoke to me in a laconic monotone, scattered with eminently quotable moments like: "yes," "no," and "I dunno, about six or seven people." It made me wonder how he had gotten as far as he did. The fact is executive suites of the world are mostly populated with middle-aged men and women not unlike Ed. In an era of 24-hour business news, it's these individuals - many of whom have had little to no media exposure for most of their careers - who are increasingly called on to be the public face of their company.
Contrary to what some corporate watchdogs would argue, I've known the vast majority of these people to be bright, ethical, and highly capable. But media communications is just not their bailiwick. They do not teach these skills in business school.
And, so, admired as they are in the country club - and feared as they might be in the boardroom - these captains of industry tremble at the prospect of spending a few minutes with a wet-behind-the-ears reporter who is often barely old enough to work for them. As a result, forays into the realm of interviews become, for these type-A personalities, remarkably type-B.
They speak in sentence fragments that have to be spliced together, electronically or in print, to be even marginally usable. (No wonder executives often feel misquoted or taken out of context.)
They listen, sometimes against their better judgment, when legal advisers tell them to think of media appearances as if they were depositions. They are instructed to say as little as possible, to fill in the gaps with plain vanilla messaging, and to approach every reporter as an adversary. Of course, with most reporters, this advice has an opposite effect of what the executive wants.
An effective relationship with journalists - be they print reporters, TV broadcasters, or even bloggers - has nothing to do with creating an adversary. It has everything to do with correctly understanding journalists and their needs.
The supposition that reporters are always looking for their subjects to simply "answer the question" is fundamentally wrong. Sure, sometimes they need those answers. But at their core, good reporters aren't just looking for "yes" or "no."
They are looking for a narrative. They long for the unexpected. Their pulse quickens at information that surprises them, intrigues them, moves them. They want to satiate the basic curiosities that led them to become journalists in the first place.
It's why the definition of news is so often summed up with the phrase "man bites dog." It's no accident that Don Hewitt, the creator of 60 Minutes, titled his memoir, Tell Me a Story.
This imbalance between the demand for good narrative and the limited supply of compelling material is a big reason why much of today's news cycle appears so tediously dysfunctional. It's why what you see, read, and hear often seems sensationalistic on the one hand; repetitive, trite, and boring on the other.
But therein lies an opportunity. The people who know the secrets to filling these voids - and filling them well, as opposed to poorly - get called to appear in media, again and again.
One day, if he can overcome his self-defeating mindset and wipe that sour puss off his face, Ed might take his training to heart and become one of those people. But that seems unlikely. Shortly after agreeing to begin an intensive program with us to remediate his media skills, Ed's board decided to do a little remediation itself by bypassing him for the post of CEO and handing it to someone from outside the company. They also decided that improving Ed's media skills wasn't worth the time or cost.
Ed can take comfort in this stark fact: When it comes to his own media unpreparedness - and by extension, his company's - he is far from alone.

The structure of the modern nuclear family is a relatively new invention when considered along the timeline of human history. Long before "Leave It to Beaver" ideals became the norm, families didn't isolate themselves from their relatives, and parents didn't leave home to spend their days in an office. Extended families lived together in the same community, every individual contributed to the welfare of the whole, and a wide variety of close, personal relationships were essential to a family's survival. When children were old enough to help, they worked alongside their parents, and if a mother became overwhelmed with the care of an infant, there were grandparents, cousins or siblings who could step in and give her a break.
Older children learned from the daily examples of their parents as they cared for infants in the family and they participated in the process. Consequently, by the time they had children of their own they were not ignorant about child care.
But that was long ago: society today, especially in the West, is very different. Families live hundreds, even thousands of miles from the support of relatives. Often they live somewhat isolated lives even among neighbors. Families have fewer children, and it is no longer unusual for a child to have no siblings at all. As a result, an increasing number of adults have had very little daily personal experience in providing for the needs of young children. It should not surprise us then that by the time these adults are parents they are relatively ignorant about child care, and the results can be heartrending.
Jane hadn't intended to return to work so soon after their new baby was born, but her husband's business was booming and Mark needed her help. Concerned about the quality of daycare, they decided to hire a cousin to care for the baby during the day. What Jane and Mark didn't know was that the cousin had also obtained a job. For more than a year--the first year of the baby's life--the cousin left the baby daily on its own, feeding and changing him in the morning after Jane and Mark left, again at her midday lunch break, and finally just before the parents returned.
Although Jane began to notice that the baby's development seemed unusually slow, the pediatrician felt it was not excessively so, and Jane was inexperienced enough to be reassured by the fact that her baby never cried.
Then the inevitable happened. Jane came home unexpectedly one day to find the house dark. When she found her son sitting alone in his crib with a soiled diaper and no one caring for him, she fired the cousin and heaved a sigh of relief that all had ended well--the house had not burned down; he hadn't choked on anything--she was sure her son would be fine. He wasn't. As the boy grew, no one connected the odd rocking behavior he exhibited under stress or his stunted social development and depression with the neglect he'd endured in his first 18 months of life.
Finally, when their son was 14, Mark and Jane took him to see Dr. Bruce Perry for the first time. Perry is an experienced child psychiatrist with an impressive background. During his career he has served as chief of psychiatry at Texas Children's Hospital, vice-chairman for Psychiatric Research at Baylor College of Medicine, and a consultant to the FBI. He has treated children subjected to incredible traumas and extensive neglect.
Perry uses a "neurosequential" approach to treatment, which is based on the contributions of neuroscience and the explosion of understanding that emerged from the 90's "decade of the brain."
"A foundational principle of brain development is that neural systems organize and become functional in a sequential manner," he explains. "The organization of a less mature region depends, in part, upon incoming signals from lower, more mature regions. If one system doesn't get what it needs when it needs it, those that rely upon it may not function well either, even if the stimuli that the later developing system needs are being provided appropriately. The key to healthy development is getting the right experiences in the right amounts at the right time."
Pepperdine University Professor of Psychology Louis Cozolino concurs. "Because the first few years of life are a period of exhuberant brain development," he says, "early experience has a disproportionate impact on the development of neural systems. In this way, early negative interpersonal experiences become a primary source of the symptoms for which people seek relief in psychotherapy."
What are the right experiences for the developing infant brain? It seems almost self-evident, but the first needs of human beings include cuddling, healthy touch and gentle, affectionate stimulation. To develop what psychologists call "secure attachment" infants need caretakers who demonstrate that they love them, who meet their needs, calm their fears, keep them safe and encouragingly help them achieve physical milestones. When such stimulation is withheld, the brain's corresponding neurosystems change accordingly. Since they are "use-dependent," the systems that do not become stimulated at this crucial time will not develop, and these are the very areas of the brain that moderate our ability to have relationships, to respond appropriately to stress, and to mediate pleasure and empathy.
"We are social mammals," Perry points out. "For years mental health professionals taught people that they could be psychologically healthy without social support, that 'unless you love yourself, no one else will love you.' . . . The truth is, you cannot love yourself unless you have been loved and are loved. The capacity to love cannot be built in isolation."
Unfortunately, too many children do suffer the consequences of complete neglect or high doses of the wrong kind of stimulation. But the brain is an amazingly plastic and resilient organ as Jane and Mark discovered when Perry began teaching them techniques that would replace the stimulation their son had missed. Did it help that he received this attention before adulthood? Probably so. Certainly the earlier the intervention, the easier and more complete the cure. But there is plasticity in the adult brain as well.
Cozolino points to research that suggests "in the transition from dating to marriage, there is a broad tendency for partners with insecure and disorganized attachment to develop increasingly secure patterns . . . . For many of us, adult relationships give us a second, third, and fourth chance at shaping our attachment circuitry and living a happy and satisfying life."
Ideally, of course--children should not need to wait for a second, third or fourth chance. Perry believes that closer families and stronger communities would increase the chances that children would receive what they need the first time around, and that any problems would be noticed earlier. "We need to educate people about the needs of infants and create better ways of addressing them," he says. "We need to have an infant- and child-literate society, where everyone who has or works with children knows what to expect. For example, if an infant doesn't cry at all, it's just as much of a cause for concern as if he cries too much. Becoming more aware of age-appropriate behavior will ensure that, when necessary, children can get help as soon as possible."

The photographer's eye is probably his greatest asset, and if you are new to photography it should be one of the first things you learn to understand. Photographers are not born with a creative eye; your eye will develop within time, and in some cases it takes a great deal of time.
Time will vary among different individuals. It will all depend on the person's determination to become a great photographer, on the training, and how you apply your training.
Photographers should be trained to see things differently, and should be always on the lookout for objects and scenes that will look good on print. Training, colleges and photography tutors will only teach you so much; most of the creativity you develop will be due to your hard work and awareness of what is around you. But, regardless of this - there are always ways to develop your eye at a faster pace.
One method of making your eye more apt for photography is true constant visual inspection of other photographer's images. By browsing through magazines, websites and published work, you can see how photographers apply the tricks of the trade.
When viewing a photographers images study how he composed his shot. Also study how he used the elements of light and composition together. Study the shadows in each image to see where he placed his studio lights. If some of his images were taken outdoors shadows will still appear. Understanding light and composition is key to good imagery.
Another method is when you take images, compare them to images taken by well-known professionals. You need to be your own hardest critic. Do not be afraid to return to a scene and retake your shots. This will only make you better.

The last time you tried to take photographs of your dog or cat, did you wind up with a tiny, blurry blob in the corner? An unrecognizable mess? Do you have problems making your dog look happy and attentive? Were they even looking at the camera? Was everyone bleeding by the end of the last portrait session with your cat?
You can never completely take away the challenge of pet portraits but with three basic steps it becomes much easier to get good ones. Shooting a good portrait of your pet Fido or Felix is definitely something you can do. It's not that difficult.
First, think about the entire scene.
What are you using as a background? Are you going to shoot this indoors, or outdoors? Whichever, check to see what distracting objects are out there. Are pedestrians walking by? Is there garbage strewn all over the ground? Are there tree branches, fences or poles sticking out of your dog or cat's head? Are there cars whizzing by on the street in the background? Are their kids playing nearby? If you only take just a few minutes to think about your backdrop, and remove any distractions, the odds of getting a good pet portrait will dramatically increase.
Second, is there someone that can act as your assistant?
Trying to do a pet portrait by yourself exponentially increases the difficulty. Fido doesn't know what you want him to do, and will follow you every time you back off to take a picture. Felix is just plain going to take off. You may not see Felix again for two or three days.
If you have an assistant, let them control the dog or cat while you get in position to take the picture. Zoom in as close as you can on the dog or cat's face, get yourself focused, and when you're ready, simply have your assistant take one step backwards. You fire the shutter. You need to be pretty quick on the trigger to make all this happen before the dog or cat can take off. But, with a little practice it becomes fairly easy. With your assistant there to help catch them, they'll be reposed and ready for their next shot before you know it.
Third, how do you get your dog or cat looking at the camera with an attentive expression?
This is a relatively easy task. Get yourself a squeak toy, preferably something flat so it won't roll away, and squeak it. For the first few shots, you will want to hold it out of sight and squeak very softly. The dog's ears will shoot up to attention and they'll have an inquisitive look on their face - while trying to find the source of the sound. This should work for quite a few shots. Once they've located the squeaker, and no longer need to search for it, you can start squeaking it louder. When simply squeaking the toy no longer works to attract their attention, you can flick it up into the air. (This is when a flat toy will be a major benefit for you. You don't want to spend all your time chasing the toys.) By the way, flicking the squeaker into the air also has the added bonus of making a dog pull its tongue back into its mouth.
You are going to want to get several shots of them with their tongues both in and out of the mouth. With the tongue out of the mouth, they'll look happy. With the tongue in the mouth, it becomes a more classic portrait.
Squeakers and sounds don't seem to be as interesting to cats as they are to dogs. For a cat the squeaker may work once or twice, but after that you will need a visual stimulus. Peacock or ostrich feathers work really well for this task.
These steps are deceptively simple but if you try them I think you'll be amazed at the improved results.
