We have all been there. The subject is bland and beyond your own ability to manipulate. Event coverage is the most common situation for this but your creativity has two choices: One, it can shut down and shoot the boring subject and become a boring video, or two, you can maximize the potential by implementing the following four shots that will keep your audience interested and prevent you from falling asleep during the shoot.POV: Point of View Shot This means shooting the action from the point of view of the subject itself. One of the most memorable POV shots I have ever seen is during the film The Patriot when the cannon ball comes right at the camera and then cuts to a soldier being hit by that same cannon ball. It ignites interest and instantly forces the audience to become part of the action. Utilize POV shots when there is a lot of shots of the same action.Rack Focus: Changing the focus between a close subject and a distant subject. These are cool because it puts the camera man in direct control of the audience. By switching the camera focus manually between subjects distant and close allows you to include two totally distinct subjects without cutting or moving the camera. The audience is forced to follow the focus since anything blurred cannot be easily interpreted. It adds a professional look to any video.Crooked Angle: Turn the camera to the side so that the ground is no longer parallel with the square of the viewfinder. I am consistently amazed at how interesting these shots can be. I do not recommend a lot of movement during such a shot unless you wish to see the audience get sick and vomit on your leather couches. The journey to having my first novel for children published has been riddled with road blocks and shonky bridges. The good news? At every rickety stage I've picked up tips (and anti-tips) which I'm happy to share with Newswrite readers...Read For me, this was the easy stage! Aspiring writers need to read like maniacs to be aware of other writers' work, both locally and internationally. There is no point writing a killer story if it resembles something already published. Sadly, that means no scar-faced teen wizards named Barry.Write Here's a simple equation: the more you write, the better you become at writing. By the time I was ready to be born I'd already completed my first three manuscripts (spent most of the time looking around for somewhere to plug in my laptop). When the doctor smacked me on the backside I squinted at him and went, 'Waaah!' Which of course meant, 'Ah, you must be my agent!' I went on to scrawl home-made comics throughout my childhood before I began writing for surf magazines at age 17. Since then, I've had thousands of articles and pieces of fiction published. A lot were 'hack' stories; a few won me awards and contests. All helped build my writing skills and voice.Feedback A local teacher read my first manuscript to his class (thank you, Bob Swoope). The feedback was terrific. One kid enthused, "It's just like Harry Potter, only funnier!" I dined off that compliment for a month. I'm lucky ten year olds believe payment in Paddle Pops is the industry standard for editors, else I'd be broke by now (well, actually I am broke). I read all my stories to my daughter, her friends, and any young relatives I can bail up. Whenever my juvenile focus groups wander off to the nearest TV, I know the chapter I'm reading needs major reconstruction. Whenever the kids sit glued to their chairs and demand more, I know my story is heading in the right direction (and I've bought the right glue and Paddle Pops). It's useful to let adults rip into your story as well. Adult writers, that is. I've learned it's best to avoid family members and friends, unless you enjoy making these people flee whenever they see you. Join a local or online critique group instead. Growing elephant-thick skin will also help you through this stage.Rewrite Finally, you think your book is ready. It isn't. Time to let the manuscript breathe for a month, before revising it with fresh eyes. Be ruthless. Hack those excess adjectives that editors loathe. Delete every scene that does not sparkle, advance the plot on multiple levels and compel the reader to keep reading. Rewrite again As a writer for children, you're not only competing against the mutant slush pile from Hell and other kid's books, but against the internet, computer games and 24 hour cartoon networks. Remember: the modern kid is smarter, more savvy and easily bored than any generation before.Submitting Crunch time. When you submit your first manuscript, get stuck straight into writing the second. When your manuscript returns unloved, send another submission out on the same day (or even better, send two). For every five rejections, rewrite. Never surrender.Over the course of several months, I sent my manuscript to every agent in the country. They all rejected until I was dejected. So I directly targeted publishers instead. I almost fell out of my computer chair when the second one immediately replied. The wonderful Ibis Publishing of Melbourne liked my story so much, they asked me to commit to writing two more in the same series. Truth is, to be published, I would have committed to writing a sequel naked in a bubble in the middle of Pitt Street. Luckily, they didn't. But I still have my bubble.Pre-publication Over a year has gone by since my book was accepted. My patient editor Belinda Bolliger has driven me through two more rewrites to add backstory, cull my ellipsis fever and tone down my more extreme jokes. My major character has become less obnoxious and had a sex change from girl to boy. Why? Apparently, girls will read about boys; but boys aren't happy reading about girls.I originally named my book after the planet of talking horses and mutant chooks at the centre of my story. However, Uponia (too strange) was changed to Planet Horse Fart (too rude) to ZAPP to Planet Horse (too horsey) to Raz James and The Amazing ZAPP Discovery (too vague) to Erasmus James and the Galactic ZAPP Machine (too... wait, that's it!). The cover art has changed almost as many times while the date of publication has been put back from last Christmas to May to June to September. Fingers crossed on that last one! It is vital to remain flexible and positive through such changes and delays. Yoga helps. Better to get everything right than to rush out an inferior product. The extra time has also given me time to set up a website, work out a battle plan with the Ibis marketing team Anthony and Paola and watch my hair turn even more grey. Meanwhile, my bank account has nose-dived, but who really needs fancy mod-cons like electricity and food?On the road Last month I drove to Sydney to psyche up the Pan Macmillan sales team. I delivered a ten minute standup comedy routine and was as surprised as anyone when the friendly team laughed at my feeble jokes and seemed enthused about selling my book. On the long drive home, I realised this would be but the first of many such promotional trips: to schools, book signings, anything and everything that will help me sell a few more copies and keep doing what I love so much. Then the rain began to bucket and my front tyre blew out. As I bounced into the bush, I realised I was about to experience another first on the scenic detour known as Publication Road.

In this era of advanced technology, there are various methods which we can use to determine our baby sex beforehand. Most high-tech methods are very expensive or/and invasive. Being a citizen and a Medical Doctor in a developing country like Cambodia, and as a result of some research and discussion with my professors, i personally suggest The Shettles method ( by Dr. Shettles ).SHETTLES METHODSBasically, men produce two types of sperms, the X (female) and Y (male). According to Dr. Shettles' studies the y-sperms are smaller, weaker, but faster than their siblings x-sperms, which are bigger, stronger, but slower.Based on this fact, there are several things you can do to "favor" the conception of boys or girls:(1) The most important aspect of all is timing of intercourse during the monthly cycle. The closer to ovulation you have sex, the better the chances to have a boy, because the y-sperms are faster and tend to get to the egg first. If you have sex 3 days or more before ovulation, the better your chances to conceive a girl, because the weaker y-sperms tend to die sooner and the x-sperms will be available in greater quantity whenever the egg is released. On the other hand, having sex from 2 days before ovulation, through a few days after ovulation, is better for conceiving a boy. Around the 2-day point -- 48 hours before ovulation -- seems to be the 50/50 mark.(2) The pH of the women's tract is also very important. A more acidic environment favors girls, since it will kill the weaker y-sperms first, leaving a greater quantity of x-sperms available to fertilize the egg. On the other hand, a more alkaline environment favors boys. Shettles recommends a douche of water and vinegar (acid) immediately before intercourse to favor a girl; a douche of water and baking soda (alkaline) will help for a boy.(Don't try this without reading Shettles! You have to dilute the douches properly, according to his formula, or they won't help and might hurt you.)Note: Some women are naturally very acidic and have a hard time conceiving boys.(3) Position of intercourse and depth of penetration are important, partly because of pH. The closer to the entrance to the vagina, the more acidic the women's tract is. Also, deep penetration places the sperm closer to the egg, and gives those aggressive boy sperms a head start :-). So, a shallow penetration will favor girls and a deeper will favor boys. Shettles recommends missionary-position for a girl, and rear-entry (dog-style) for a boy.(4) Women's orgasms can also be important. It also has to do with pH. When a woman has an orgasm, the body releases some kind of substance that makes the environment more alkaline, favoring boys. He recommends no orgasms when trying for girls!(5) The sperm count is another factor. Obviously, a low sperm count to begin with doesn't favor either sex. But a high sperm count favors boys. Shettles recommends three things:(a) When trying for a boy, don't have sex for 3- 4 days before you reach the target date a day or two before ovulation! For girls, have sex everyday from day=1 or day=5 ("cleaner" :-)), and stop 3 days before ovulation.(b) Shettles recommends that for boys, the man wear loose underwear only -- that is, men who usually wear briefs or other tight underwear should switch to boxers. The idea is the same as wearing boxers to increase overall fertility -- the testicles need cooler temperatures for sperms to survive, and the Y-sperms, since they are weaker, will be helped more than the X-sperms by this method. However, Shettles does NOT recommend the opposite, that men wear briefs for a girl -- this will just decrease overall fertility.(c) Also, for a girl, the man is supposed to take a hot bath immediately before intercourse. "Room temperature" is fine for a boy. The idea is the same as the briefs versus boxers -- give the X- sperms an advantage.(6) Finally, in trying for a boy, Shettles recommends a nice cup of caffeinated coffee for the man, right before sex -- he isn't clear on how or why this works, but apparently it gives the Y-sperms a jolt!Summary of the methodFor baby girl:- Have sex 3 days or more before ovulation - Position of intercourse: Missionary - No women's orgasm - Related to sperm count, have sex everyday and stop 3 days before ovulation - Right before sex, the woman should bathe in a solution mixed by vinegar and water and the man should bathe in hot water to kill the Y sperm and favour X spermFor baby boy:- Have sex close to ovulation (less than 2 days) - Position of intercourse: rear entry or Dog-style - Women's orgasm - Related to sperm count, when trying for a boy, don't have sex for 3- 4 days before you reach the target date (a day or two before ovulation) - Right before sex, the woman should bathe in a solution mixed by water and baking soda and the man should bathe in cool water to favour Y spermMy own comments:Until now, there has not yet been any scientific proof and recognition of the most effective methods in determining baby's sex before conception. However, these SHETTLES methods seem to be the most reasonably accepted by medical professionals. And, most importantly, these methods do not cause any harm of waste of money, so why not give them a try?

In March, 2007 Casio released Jack Halpern's highly acclaimed Kanji Learner's Dictionary (KALD) for the EX-word Dataplus series of electronic dictionaries, available in both CD-ROM and SD card, which is a far more useful kanji dictionary to English-speaking learners of Japanese. Until recently, kanji dictionaries found in many denshi jisho models were of limited use to English-speaking Learners of Japanese (EsLJ) in the elementary to intermediate levels since its entries, written in Japanese, presupposes a considerable degree of literacy in Japanese to be able to use it profitably. Generally, EsLJ use a denshi jisho's kanji dictionary to merely obtain a kanji's on-kun readings and still have to rely on their paper editions to learn its meaning and stroke order. (While some denshi jisho makers recently began to include stroke-order animation this feature is quite limited to a few select models.) Furthermore, using a denshi jisho to look up kanji when reading a Japanese magazine, newspaper, or book also requires some knowledge about kanji radicals and parts to expedite the look-up process. It is little wonder then that Casio's March 2007 release of Jack Halpern's Kanji Learner's Dictionary (KALD) for EX-word Dataplus models has created quite a stir because this is perhaps the first time that a kanji dictionary principally geared towards the learning needs of EsLJ has become available as electronic dictionary content. At present though, there is yet no Dataplus model that includes the KALD as a bundled-in dictionary; instead, users will have to purchase this separately in either a CD-ROM or SD card as add-on content. This characteristic usefulness of the KALD mainly derives from its providing the English core meanings of kanji - a simple enough difference but one that is of great significance as to how EsLJ memorize kanji characters. The English core meaning "is a concise keyword that conveys the character's most fundamental meaning," and "appeals to the learner's powers of association," thus greatly facilitating the learning event. KALD entries also features a stroke-order diagram that will certainly be most helpful to beginner-level kanji learners. With 2926 kanji entries, the KALD will enable users to look up almost any kanji encountered while reading modern print literature such as newspapers, books, magazines, including the 285 kanji in the official list (Jinmei list) of kanji approved for use in personal names. Each kanji entry usually also includes a list of words using that kanji and a short definition of each. This compound-kanji word list often saves the user the extra effort of looking up the meaning of a compound-kanji word in the denshi jisho's Japanese-English dictionary. The cumbersome process of looking up kanji using conventional dictionaries has long vexed both EsLJ and native Japanese learners alike. These kanji dictionaries use stroke count, radicals, and kanji parts singly or in combination as kanji search indices. The print edition of KALD uses an ingenious "System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns (SKIP)" that enables users to look up kanji much more quickly, and this was hailed by many Japanese language educators as a major breakthrough with regard to this problem. The denshi jisho edition of KALD also offers the use of SKIP as an alternative kanji look-up method in addition to the conventional search methods using radicals and on-kun readings. Thus, when looking up kanji encountered from external content (i.e. content that is not stored in the denshi jisho's memory resources) such as print materials, even users who own older-generation Casio Dataplus models that are not equipped with handwriting recognition can still benefit from the use of SKIP. However for those fortunate users who already own any of the latest models from the EX-word Dataplus3 series (e.g. Casio XD GW6800), looking up kanji has never been easier since KALD also allows a search based on handwriting input. What both the print and denshi jisho editions of KALD lack is an index based on the English core meanings of kanji. For a dictionary that touts the mnemonic significance of English core meanings to an EsLJ's learning of kanji this oversight seems all the more baffling. Since many EsLJ will more readily recall the English meaning of a kanji character than its on-kun reading or stroke order, there will be many occasions wherein they will want to verify the meanings of vaguely familiar kanji using an English-meaning index. Enabling such a search also greatly helps reinforce the associative link between a character and its meaning. Adding an English-meaning index seems simple enough though, and perhaps we can expect the creators of KALD to include this in the next edition. "Triple Tsuika" is the defining feature of the EX-word Dataplus series - the feature that allows users to add to the internal content (i.e. Data that resides in the denshi jisho's memory resources) via CD-ROM, SD card, and text download. This is the very feature that makes it possible to install KALD into a Casio Dataplus denshi jisho. Once installed, a user browsing an entry in a different dictionary (e.g. Japanese-English dictionary) can use the denshi jisho's Superjump function to select a particular kanji and segue to the KALD to look it up. This also works just as well for user-installed content, such as books or encyclopedias from commercial content providers or internet freeware sites, allowing a Casio Dataplus to function as an e-book reader. More than obviating bulky paper editions, the integration of KALD into a Casio Dataplus3 series model will encourage EsLJ to delve more into the wealth of available denshi jisho content, both external and internal. Educators may also recognize the viability of creating language-teaching materials such as grammar guides as internal content. I moved to the Pacific Palisades because it gives me access to the beach and the mountains, so now I can hike, swim and jog every day. It's part of who I am, and it makes me really happy. In my work as an interior designer, my purpose is not only to create a beautiful home for my clients, but to help them improve their lifestyle. And hopefully, that lifestyle can extend beyond the four walls of their home to include outdoor spaces. A lot of my clients moved to Southern California to take advantage of the great weather, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve for bringing together indoor and outdoor living spaces. Choose window treatments that let the outside in. When I work with a client, I look from the outside in. First of all, I talk to my clients about what type of window treatments or designs they'd like to use so that we can maximize the view from the window or balcony. Use mirrors to make small space seem bigger. I recently worked a bachelor pad that was very small but had breathtaking views, especially from the balcony. Children are most at risk from this chemical because they have underdeveloped mechanisms for detoxifying their bodies. Additionally, evidence now exists that many of the side effects of exposure to Bisphenol-A do not present until years after exposure.
For years toxicology scientists have assumed that the level of risk associated with toxins was correlated with the size of the dose, however, a few studies have now found that lower levels of Bisphenol-A exposure are worse than higher levels. Studies by the U.S. CDC have shown that 95 percent of Americans have levels of Bisphenol-A that are at or above the concentrations that are known to cause adverse effects in studies with laboratory animals.
Take Action: Buy bottles that are free of Bisphenol-A. Before you buy bottles, take a look at the plastics number on the bottom of the bottle. Only buy bottles and plastics that are labeled with a #1, #2 or #5. An alternative option is to buy glass.

Have you ever wondered about the differences between various types of exercise? For example, why should a person have to do aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise (i.e. lift weights), and stretch? Isn't there a neat, tidy little way to just roll it all into one and get it over with?
Well, there's a good reason you should be doing a range of different exercise types. It's known as the 'principle of training specificity'. In plain English that means that your body will adapt quite differently to the three basic types of exercise, and that one can't really substitute for the other. Let's look at each of the three exercise types briefly:
Anaerobic training (Weight lifting): When you perform any type of resistance exercise, such as lifting weights, your muscles (and bones) adapt by getting bigger and stronger. This is beneficial because it allows you to do everyday things better and more safely, such as lifting your child or keeping your balance on the stairs. Also, when your body works anaerobically it is burning fuel (mostly carbohydrates) without using oxygen. This requires a certain metabolic pathway, and specific enzymes. As you perform this type of exercise this pathway and enzymes become more efficient at their jobs.
Aerobic training (Endurance): Muscular and cardiovascular endurance are improved with aerobic exercise, allowing you do go further with less effort. When you exercise aerobically your body is able to supply oxygen to the process of burning fuel it has stored. This allows it to burn fat rather than carbohydrates, and uses an entirely different metabolic pathway along with different enzymes. Just as when you work anaerobically, working aerobically causes this pathway to become more efficient. Want to train your body how to burn fat for fuel? Aerobic exercise is the key.
Flexibility (Stretching): When you do flexibility exercises you are teaching your muscles to move further, more easily, and more freely. This is important to keep you free of injury, as well as to enhance your posture and body alignment. Neither anaerobic nor aerobic exercise put the right type of stimulus on muscles to get them to be more limber in any significant way.
You can see that each of the three types of exercise have their place and that all are important. Any exercise program that doesn't include all three is simply incomplete and won't be as effective as one that is more well rounded. Take the time to work them all into your fitness routine, and your body will thank you.

A new parent's major concern over baby toy safety should be focused on the suitability of the toy for the baby.
New regulations clearly state on each toy what age range the toy is suitable for. The danger now lies in the parent providing a toy that is unsuitable for their age range. A good example of this is when the baby has an elder sibling and has access to their toys that are inadvertently left lying around.
When buying new baby toys all new parents should check that the item has a CE mark or Lion Mark. If the product carries one of these marks the parent can have the assurance that the toys are manufactured in line with a strict set of criteria's. Parents must be cautious of toys that do not carry these marks. They should assume that they are totally unsuitable and as such are not safe for the baby. A good example of such items is usually cheap toys available at market stalls or prizes at fair grounds.
The new parents should also check carefully the quality of the toy. Be especially vigilant when looking for small parts that might easily become detached. This is especially important if the baby is under three years of age. The danger lies in the baby trying to swallow the loose bits which may result in them chocking to death.

Other areas that should be watched out for are toys with ribbons attached as again the baby may chew on it and choke. Also try to avoid allowing babies access to toys with magnetic parts and regularly check that the toys are in good condition. Basically use good common sense and good housekeeping techniques.

They will have already gone through the learning curve that you are about to experience and most will readily share their experiences and advice with you. Independent men used to be easily scared off. Being too clingy, especially in front of their friends did the trick with embarrassing ease. These days it isn't enough. Independent man now wants a clingy woman to endorse his manliness and confirm his desirability in front of his mates. So the trick here is to be two women. That's in an emotional sense, not in a scary wearing a wig, pretending to be your own twin way. When alone be very clingy. Getting rid of this one is relatively easy. They want a girl to be a girl. You have to need them. I mean really need them to the point of helplessness. You have to become so weak you cannot open a single jar yourself. Nor can you open doors, lift shopping bags or drive a car. Strangely though you can lift lots of washing and open any type of beer can with your teeth. So if he comes home to find you have driven to the shops, opened several jars to make dinner including the one he couldn't open himself and fixed the oil leak on the car, he is history. "Well, I guess it's time for my root canal."
That was the most memorable thing that Ed would say to me all day. Ed (not his real name) was the number-two executive at a major U.S. financial firm, and first in line to succeed the soon-to-retire CEO. He had been through the wringer with a number of media trainers, and it showed.
We had been introduced, and Ed just didn't want to be with me. There was a seemingly permanent scowl on his beefy, reddish face. He had a perfectly pressed shirt and great gold cufflinks, but his collar was a couple of sizes too tight.
When it came time for our mock interview, Ed spoke to me in a laconic monotone, scattered with eminently quotable moments like: "yes," "no," and "I dunno, about six or seven people." It made me wonder how he had gotten as far as he did. The fact is executive suites of the world are mostly populated with middle-aged men and women not unlike Ed. In an era of 24-hour business news, it's these individuals - many of whom have had little to no media exposure for most of their careers - who are increasingly called on to be the public face of their company.
Contrary to what some corporate watchdogs would argue, I've known the vast majority of these people to be bright, ethical, and highly capable. But media communications is just not their bailiwick. They do not teach these skills in business school.
And, so, admired as they are in the country club - and feared as they might be in the boardroom - these captains of industry tremble at the prospect of spending a few minutes with a wet-behind-the-ears reporter who is often barely old enough to work for them. As a result, forays into the realm of interviews become, for these type-A personalities, remarkably type-B.
They speak in sentence fragments that have to be spliced together, electronically or in print, to be even marginally usable. (No wonder executives often feel misquoted or taken out of context.)
They listen, sometimes against their better judgment, when legal advisers tell them to think of media appearances as if they were depositions. They are instructed to say as little as possible, to fill in the gaps with plain vanilla messaging, and to approach every reporter as an adversary. Of course, with most reporters, this advice has an opposite effect of what the executive wants.
An effective relationship with journalists - be they print reporters, TV broadcasters, or even bloggers - has nothing to do with creating an adversary. It has everything to do with correctly understanding journalists and their needs.
The supposition that reporters are always looking for their subjects to simply "answer the question" is fundamentally wrong. Sure, sometimes they need those answers. But at their core, good reporters aren't just looking for "yes" or "no."
They are looking for a narrative. They long for the unexpected. Their pulse quickens at information that surprises them, intrigues them, moves them. They want to satiate the basic curiosities that led them to become journalists in the first place.
It's why the definition of news is so often summed up with the phrase "man bites dog." It's no accident that Don Hewitt, the creator of 60 Minutes, titled his memoir, Tell Me a Story.
This imbalance between the demand for good narrative and the limited supply of compelling material is a big reason why much of today's news cycle appears so tediously dysfunctional. It's why what you see, read, and hear often seems sensationalistic on the one hand; repetitive, trite, and boring on the other.
But therein lies an opportunity. The people who know the secrets to filling these voids - and filling them well, as opposed to poorly - get called to appear in media, again and again.
One day, if he can overcome his self-defeating mindset and wipe that sour puss off his face, Ed might take his training to heart and become one of those people. But that seems unlikely. Shortly after agreeing to begin an intensive program with us to remediate his media skills, Ed's board decided to do a little remediation itself by bypassing him for the post of CEO and handing it to someone from outside the company. They also decided that improving Ed's media skills wasn't worth the time or cost.
Ed can take comfort in this stark fact: When it comes to his own media unpreparedness - and by extension, his company's - he is far from alone.

By that I mean things like being able to instantly review your pictures for instance, or not having to buy film and pay to have it processed. Additionally, photos taken with a digital camera can be edited through software applications to correct flaws, as well as being instantly suitable for internet uploading. In short, photography has become a much more affordable activity since the advent of the digital camera.
A digital camera in the $500 - $700 range is near professional in quality, and most inexpensive ones will give you an acceptable image.
· Learn to use the manual settings on your digital camera. You will almost always get better images when you exercise full control over the settings as opposed to the automatic mode of the camera. The camera will always choose the "blandest" setting. When you have full control, you can file tune the settings for much better results.
· The basic attribute of a digital camera that determines image quality is its megapixel rating. The higher the megapixel rating, the better image quality. If you plan to enlarge your photos or publish high quality images to the internet, you will need a camera in the 8 to 12 megapixel range. At five megapixels, image quality is similar to that obtained with the use of film.
· Learn to adjust aperture and shutter speed settings on your digital camera. By aperture, (f-stops), you control the amount of light getting into the camera, as well as the depth of field. A higher f-stop means a smaller aperture, and hence less light entering the camera. One-sixtieth of a second is about as slow a shutter speed as you can use when taking a hand-held shot, and not get any blur.
· Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter stays open allowing light to enter the camera. An extremely fast shutter speed is 1/2000 of a second, while camera settings usually allow up to about one second, which is very slow. Shutter speeds can range from a fraction of a second to several minutes or even hours. Practice and experience are the best ways to figure out which combinations of aperture and shutter speed are best for different kinds of photos.
· Some photographers force their camera shutters to stay open for much longer to create various special effects. Using a slow shutter speed lets in more light, but it also makes it very difficult to get a crisp picture. Any movement at all (of either the subject or the camera) will cause blurring. Sometimes you may want this effect, but for a clear picture of a moving object, you need a fast shutter speed.
· Decide on the composition of the subject matter within the frame of the viewfinder. This will determine the ultimate outcome of the finished product. Try to "picture" the result you are trying to obtain, and arrange the elements of the photograph to suit.
· Master your digital camera. By that I mean read the manual that came with the unit and familiarize yourself with all the available settings and the location of the controls for them.
· Use a tripod. You should always try to use a tripod when using your camera. It will ensure there is no movement while the picture is being taken. If it's impractical to use a tripod, try to find a stable surface upon which you can rest the camera. If that too is not possible, at least try to brace yourself against something solid while you are holding the camera. Any of these methods will reduce camera shake and result in better photos.
· Use a polarizing filter. If there were one single thing you can do to improve your pictures, using a polarizing filter would be it. This filter darkens an overly light sky, providing an image that's much more pleasing to the eye.
· Decide on your subject. If you wish to perfect your skills, you will have to "specialize" in the type of photos you will capture, much like a medical specialist who concentrates his efforts in a small niche category. You too will become an expert in the field you choose. It's much better to specialize than to generalize.

The structure of the modern nuclear family is a relatively new invention when considered along the timeline of human history. Long before "Leave It to Beaver" ideals became the norm, families didn't isolate themselves from their relatives, and parents didn't leave home to spend their days in an office. Extended families lived together in the same community, every individual contributed to the welfare of the whole, and a wide variety of close, personal relationships were essential to a family's survival. When children were old enough to help, they worked alongside their parents, and if a mother became overwhelmed with the care of an infant, there were grandparents, cousins or siblings who could step in and give her a break.
Older children learned from the daily examples of their parents as they cared for infants in the family and they participated in the process. Consequently, by the time they had children of their own they were not ignorant about child care.
But that was long ago: society today, especially in the West, is very different. Families live hundreds, even thousands of miles from the support of relatives. Often they live somewhat isolated lives even among neighbors. Families have fewer children, and it is no longer unusual for a child to have no siblings at all. As a result, an increasing number of adults have had very little daily personal experience in providing for the needs of young children. It should not surprise us then that by the time these adults are parents they are relatively ignorant about child care, and the results can be heartrending.
Jane hadn't intended to return to work so soon after their new baby was born, but her husband's business was booming and Mark needed her help. Concerned about the quality of daycare, they decided to hire a cousin to care for the baby during the day. What Jane and Mark didn't know was that the cousin had also obtained a job. For more than a year--the first year of the baby's life--the cousin left the baby daily on its own, feeding and changing him in the morning after Jane and Mark left, again at her midday lunch break, and finally just before the parents returned.
Although Jane began to notice that the baby's development seemed unusually slow, the pediatrician felt it was not excessively so, and Jane was inexperienced enough to be reassured by the fact that her baby never cried.
Then the inevitable happened. Jane came home unexpectedly one day to find the house dark. When she found her son sitting alone in his crib with a soiled diaper and no one caring for him, she fired the cousin and heaved a sigh of relief that all had ended well--the house had not burned down; he hadn't choked on anything--she was sure her son would be fine. He wasn't. As the boy grew, no one connected the odd rocking behavior he exhibited under stress or his stunted social development and depression with the neglect he'd endured in his first 18 months of life.
Finally, when their son was 14, Mark and Jane took him to see Dr. Bruce Perry for the first time. Perry is an experienced child psychiatrist with an impressive background. During his career he has served as chief of psychiatry at Texas Children's Hospital, vice-chairman for Psychiatric Research at Baylor College of Medicine, and a consultant to the FBI. He has treated children subjected to incredible traumas and extensive neglect.
Perry uses a "neurosequential" approach to treatment, which is based on the contributions of neuroscience and the explosion of understanding that emerged from the 90's "decade of the brain."
"A foundational principle of brain development is that neural systems organize and become functional in a sequential manner," he explains. "The organization of a less mature region depends, in part, upon incoming signals from lower, more mature regions. If one system doesn't get what it needs when it needs it, those that rely upon it may not function well either, even if the stimuli that the later developing system needs are being provided appropriately. The key to healthy development is getting the right experiences in the right amounts at the right time."
Pepperdine University Professor of Psychology Louis Cozolino concurs. "Because the first few years of life are a period of exhuberant brain development," he says, "early experience has a disproportionate impact on the development of neural systems. In this way, early negative interpersonal experiences become a primary source of the symptoms for which people seek relief in psychotherapy."
What are the right experiences for the developing infant brain? It seems almost self-evident, but the first needs of human beings include cuddling, healthy touch and gentle, affectionate stimulation. To develop what psychologists call "secure attachment" infants need caretakers who demonstrate that they love them, who meet their needs, calm their fears, keep them safe and encouragingly help them achieve physical milestones. When such stimulation is withheld, the brain's corresponding neurosystems change accordingly. Since they are "use-dependent," the systems that do not become stimulated at this crucial time will not develop, and these are the very areas of the brain that moderate our ability to have relationships, to respond appropriately to stress, and to mediate pleasure and empathy.
"We are social mammals," Perry points out. "For years mental health professionals taught people that they could be psychologically healthy without social support, that 'unless you love yourself, no one else will love you.' . . . The truth is, you cannot love yourself unless you have been loved and are loved. The capacity to love cannot be built in isolation."
Unfortunately, too many children do suffer the consequences of complete neglect or high doses of the wrong kind of stimulation. But the brain is an amazingly plastic and resilient organ as Jane and Mark discovered when Perry began teaching them techniques that would replace the stimulation their son had missed. Did it help that he received this attention before adulthood? Probably so. Certainly the earlier the intervention, the easier and more complete the cure. But there is plasticity in the adult brain as well.
Cozolino points to research that suggests "in the transition from dating to marriage, there is a broad tendency for partners with insecure and disorganized attachment to develop increasingly secure patterns . . . . For many of us, adult relationships give us a second, third, and fourth chance at shaping our attachment circuitry and living a happy and satisfying life."
Ideally, of course--children should not need to wait for a second, third or fourth chance. Perry believes that closer families and stronger communities would increase the chances that children would receive what they need the first time around, and that any problems would be noticed earlier. "We need to educate people about the needs of infants and create better ways of addressing them," he says. "We need to have an infant- and child-literate society, where everyone who has or works with children knows what to expect. For example, if an infant doesn't cry at all, it's just as much of a cause for concern as if he cries too much. Becoming more aware of age-appropriate behavior will ensure that, when necessary, children can get help as soon as possible."

Training, colleges and photography tutors will only teach you so much; most of the creativity you develop will be due to your hard work and awareness of what is around you. But, regardless of this - there are always ways to develop your eye at a faster pace.
One method of making your eye more apt for photography is true constant visual inspection of other photographer's images. By browsing through magazines, websites and published work, you can see how photographers apply the tricks of the trade.
When viewing a photographers images study how he composed his shot. Also study how he used the elements of light and composition together. Study the shadows in each image to see where he placed his studio lights. If some of his images were taken outdoors shadows will still appear. Understanding light and composition is key to good imagery.
Another method is when you take images, compare them to images taken by well-known professionals. You need to be your own hardest critic. Do not be afraid to return to a scene and retake your shots. This will only make you better.
Buying photography magazines that are marketed for the amateur photographer will also be valuable. Some magazines will let you submit your shots for comment. Don't be afraid to do this. This is where you will get honest criticism about your photography.
If you are an amateur and just want to improve your family shots, or if your goal is to become a professional, your creative eye is so important. The last time you tried to take photographs of your dog or cat, did you wind up with a tiny, blurry blob in the corner? An unrecognizable mess? Do you have problems making your dog look happy and attentive? Were they even looking at the camera? Was everyone bleeding by the end of the last portrait session with your cat?
You can never completely take away the challenge of pet portraits but with three basic steps it becomes much easier to get good ones. Shooting a good portrait of your pet Fido or Felix is definitely something you can do. It's not that difficult.
First, think about the entire scene.
What are you using as a background? Are you going to shoot this indoors, or outdoors? Whichever, check to see what distracting objects are out there. Are pedestrians walking by? Is there garbage strewn all over the ground? Are there tree branches, fences or poles sticking out of your dog or cat's head? Are there cars whizzing by on the street in the background? Are their kids playing nearby? If you only take just a few minutes to think about your backdrop, and remove any distractions, the odds of getting a good pet portrait will dramatically increase.
Second, is there someone that can act as your assistant?
Trying to do a pet portrait by yourself exponentially increases the difficulty. Fido doesn't know what you want him to do, and will follow you every time you back off to take a picture. Felix is just plain going to take off. You may not see Felix again for two or three days.
If you have an assistant, let them control the dog or cat while you get in position to take the picture. Zoom in as close as you can on the dog or cat's face, get yourself focused, and when you're ready, simply have your assistant take one step backwards. You fire the shutter. You need to be pretty quick on the trigger to make all this happen before the dog or cat can take off. But, with a little practice it becomes fairly easy. With your assistant there to help catch them, they'll be reposed and ready for their next shot before you know it.
Third, how do you get your dog or cat looking at the camera with an attentive expression?
This is a relatively easy task. Get yourself a squeak toy, preferably something flat so it won't roll away, and squeak it. For the first few shots, you will want to hold it out of sight and squeak very softly. The dog's ears will shoot up to attention and they'll have an inquisitive look on their face - while trying to find the source of the sound. This should work for quite a few shots. Once they've located the squeaker, and no longer need to search for it, you can start squeaking it louder. When simply squeaking the toy no longer works to attract their attention, you can flick it up into the air. (This is when a flat toy will be a major benefit for you. You don't want to spend all your time chasing the toys.) By the way, flicking the squeaker into the air also has the added bonus of making a dog pull its tongue back into its mouth.
You are going to want to get several shots of them with their tongues both in and out of the mouth. With the tongue out of the mouth, they'll look happy. With the tongue in the mouth, it becomes a more classic portrait.
Squeakers and sounds don't seem to be as interesting to cats as they are to dogs. For a cat the squeaker may work once or twice, but after that you will need a visual stimulus. Peacock or ostrich feathers work really well for this task.
These steps are deceptively simple but if you try them I think you'll be amazed at the improved results.
